Zydeco is a Creole mix of French, African, American and African-American forms of music performed on accordion and washboard and sung in Creole French. It has survived in the isolated swamplands of Louisiana since the early 20th Century, with little change. It has never been particularly popular outside of its hometown, though it continues to serve as accompaniment to community house-dances and its longevity has assured a certain amount of mainstream awareness.
I really like this example of a locally-concentrated, positive product of globalisation performed in a unique way. The modern history of Louisiana is in this music. I will look up famous zydeco artists and find a good flagship thing to add to the list.
