Whirlwind

The first computer to operate in real time and use video displays for output, among other things. It was finished in 1951. Its development signalled a new way of thinking of computer design – it was not simply an electronic replacement of an older mechanical system. It ran for eight years before becoming obsolete. This computer is significant only in terms of technohistory. There isn’t a particularly interesting story there, though it is a remarkable technical achievement.
