Big budget American Hollywood filmmaker. The most popular director ever, possibly. Spielberg has directed many hugely successful films, and been involved in many more. He was awarded the Liberty Medal in 2009 for ‘leadership in the pursuit of freedom’. Spielberg must be credited for re-renewing public awareness of the Holocaust, for popularising his early innovative camerawork, and for the sheer success of almost everything he’s been involved in, but his tidy tragedies are too sugary and conclusive. I don’t want to perpetuate that Hollywood mentality.
