Robert Ingpen
Guy Lochhead, 07/09/10
Australian artist, illustrator and author. Ingpen left college with a Diploma of Graphic Art, but was picked up in 1958 by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, as an artist to interpret and communicate the results of scientific research. He worked there for ten years and then worked as a freelance designer, illustrator and author, and a member of a U.N. team in Mexico and Peru, designing pamphlets on conservational and environmental projects. This continued in his home country on his return. Ingpen sounds like a good guy. I will include ‘The Voyage of the Poppykettle’, a story about a group of ‘hairy Peruvians’ who discover Australia. The book is so popular in Ingpen’s home, Geelong, that a fountain and an annual festival celebrate the mythical landing. I will also include a photograph of a character at the festival, or some sort of festival memorabilia. This is an example of modern folk tradition, with a good sense of humour.
