Former frontman of ’90s American rock band Matchbox 20 who found individual fame when he wrote ‘Smooth’ with Santana in 1999. He won Grammys and launched his solo career. He splits time between this and Matchbox 20. In 2009 he released ‘Cradlesong’, a more serious, globally-influenced record. He is also an animal-rights activist. Yeesh, I almost want to include this just an example of the all-homogenising power of the music industry. Even his most “personal” writing is filtered until it’s banal and formulaic. It’s a recipe for white bread. His activism comes across in empty platitudes, regardless of how full they may be.
