1982 arcade video game in which players control ‘Q*Bert’, a little orange creature with a big nose, as he jumps around an Escher-inspired pyramid of cubes, turning them different colours and avoiding baddies. It was notable for its sound design – incorporating actual physical hardware, and for Q*Bert’s speech-synthesised nonsense swearing. The game was a surprise success, and was ported onto numerous later platforms. I think the success of the game was a shock even to its developer. I don’t want to include it. It looks nice, but the gameplay is sometimes poor, and it all seems pretty pointless, really.
