1982 athletics drama written and directed by Robert Towne. It was one of the first films to realistically portray a mutual lesbian relationship, but it doesn’t focus on that. Instead, the film is a look at the difficulty of maintaining a relationship at the same time as having career ambitions – in this case, athletics. It is also one of the only films to deal with women’s athletics in a realistic way. Although there is some ‘unnecessary’ nudity, this film was almost unique as a source of comfort and identity for lesbians in the mid-‘80s. It has a reputation that borders on lesbian cliché, but I think it should be reappraised.
