A 1994-1997 series of paintings created by Russian-American artistic duo Komar & Melamid, in which the artists commissioned polling companies in 11 different countries to conduct scientific pols to discover what they wanted to see in art. The use of polls was meant to mimic the American democratic process. They then created the “most wanted” and “least wanted” paintings of each nation. I like this project. I think it’s funny and easily adoptable into the programmes. Although I don’t like all of Komar & Melamid’s work, this series really stands out as highlighting the simultaneous joys and flaws of applied democracy. I will shoot against a background very similar to the recurring blue landscape that seems to be so internationally popular.
