American instrument-inventor, musician and teacher. He started multii-tracking recordings when he was 13, he didn’t play any instruments at the time and compensated by using household objects to simulate conventional instrumentation. This approach to music-making can be seen in all his work since. At college, he became fascinated by other cultures’ music. He also build his first instrument there – the microtonal guitar. Since then, he has invented more instruments and performed in various experimental music groups and solo projects. In 2004, Rubenstein started a ‘Building Music’ program for Urban Arts Partnership, teaching NYC public high school students how to design and build microtonal instruments and amplifiers, and introduces them to audio software and production techniques before finishing in a live perfomance of their original songs at the Urban Arts Festival in Manhattan.
This man’s work with children is incredible. I interviewed him for issue 3 of Eye Ball magazine, so have a read! He’s fantastic. I don’t know how to include him though, as the kids don’t release their music… I’ll ask him what he thinks is a good idea…
