Generally credited with building and piloting the first successful aeroplane (though this claim is much-contested), the Wright brothers learned a lot from their work at a bike shop. Regardless of whether they were truly the first pilots, they did invent three-axis control, which remains industry standard in aviation.
I don’t want to include anything from their story, except perhaps the bike/plane connection. Their story adds to the romantic nature of the bicycle, which I want to feature heavily in the programmes.
