Nuit et Brouillard

‘Night And Fog’ is a documentary film about the Holocaust made by Alan Resnais in collaboration with concentration camp survivors Jean Cyrol and Hanns Eisler, amongst others. The film was made in 1955, and consists mostly of contemporary footage of the empty camps paired with a narrative written by Cayrol, read by Michel Bouquet. More graphic footage of active camps is used near the end of the film, but Resnais was wary of too much of this footage making the film unreal and therefore dismissible. This approach to documentary-making instead makes the film even more horrific and affecting. This is one of the best films about the Holocaust ever made, and succeeds through its subtlety, and solidarity of collaboration. I will include it.
