Nelson Algren
Guy Lochhead, 27/08/10
American writer characterised by his sympathetic portrayal of outsiders. His most famous book is probably ‘The Man With The Golden Arm’, about a morphine-addicted illegal card-dealer. Algren’s books are really enjoyable to read, in the same way Beat writing is, but they don’t really present anything I want to memorialise in the programmes. He’s a great writer, and a great storyteller, but the stories he tells aren’t going to be included.
