Mutt And Jeff
Guy Lochhead, 03/01/13
“The first daily comic strip”. First published in 1907 in the San Francisco Chronicle, the strips feature two silly men – one tall and one short – and their failed get-rich schemes. It ran until 1982, and there were numerous spin-offs and its creator, Bud Fisher, made a lot of money. Everything about this comic strip is so American, from the quippy, greed-based humour to the immediate copyrighting and exploitation of the franchise. It hasn’t aged well (though is nice as a relic), and it’s not particular positive or exemplary.
