Michael Herr
Guy Lochhead, 25/08/10
Much lauded writer of ‘Dispatches’, often cited as the best book about the Vietnam War. He suffered a nervous breakdown after its publication, then co-wrote screenplays for ‘Full Metal Jacket’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’, both of which took a lot from ‘Dispatches’. Herr’s best-known book served a purpose as a written manifestation of what many veterans and others involved in the war were trying to make sense of. For the uninitiated modern reader however, many contemporary references are lost, and it might therefore be better to include another book.
