German Lutheran pastor and anti-war campaigner. Ex-Navy officer Niemöller initially supported Hitler’s accession to power, but gradually abandoned his sympathies with National Socialism (though he’d always been against the Aryan Paragraph). He is best known for his poem ‘First They Came…’
The poem is simple and powerful, and is positive if quoted out of context, but Niemöller was far from the most positive person. His weird anti-Semitism and confused support/rejection of various causes mean he won’t be included. Also, he’s well religious.
