Underground comic hero. Most widely known as the co-creator of The Garbage Pail Kids, Newgarden’s comics are morbid commentaries on the usual stereotyping and conventions of comic strip-writing. He brings together ‘high’ and ‘low’- brow elements to create something unexpected and often spot-on. He is also co-creator of the children’s ‘Bow-Wow’ series. I’m not sure how funny Newgarden is. His humour is rooted in American culture and consumerism, and perhaps loses something when I read it from an English viewpoint. Instead of including his ‘adult’ work, I will include ‘12 Months Running’; a brilliantly simple, beautiful Bow-Wow book about the seasons.
