Lucio Fulci
Guy Lochhead, 03/03/12
Italian director. Fulci studied medicine and then worked as an art critic before directing films. He worked in many genres – comedies, westerns, action films – but is best remembered for his graphically violent horror films. His trademark sequences often involved eyeballs being mutilated, though he did sometimes have satirical backbone to his gore. Many of his films were banned or severely cut in Europe. Why would you study medicine and then make films like this professionally? Sexualised violence, temper tantrums, sickliness, willing to bend himself to whatever the pale American public was hysterical over at the time… He became less successful after fucking over his writing partner, Sacchetti. What a piece of work. Catholicism messes people up. Still, his films are a bit of a guilty pleasure.
