An American ornithologist and artist who produced some of the most influential wildlife portraiture of the late 19th/early 20th century. He discovered the Fuerte’s Oriole whilst on a collecting expedition with Frank Chapman, curator of the American Museum of Natural History. Fuertes was undeniably an important person in ornithology, but I didn’t feel as excited about him as I do about, for example, Jörg Kühn. Not that it’s a competition, but I just don’t want to fill the programs with people who draw birds.
