Komar & Melamid
Guy Lochhead, 11/09/10
Russian-born American collaborative artistic team that created art together between 1967 and 2003. Their works are playful and satirical, and often reference their background as dadaist, socialist realists working under Soviet Union rule. Art jokes are rarely funny. Komar & Melamid have extra weight because their works were targeted by the Soviet government in the early-’70s. Now, though, they’re just art people. I do find their People’s Choice series of paintings funny, however. In this, they create “most wanted” and “least wanted” paintings according to public opinion of different polled nations, intending to mimic the America democratic process. I’ll write about this separately.
