German Socialist politician and revolutionary who opposed World War I and was murdered after leading the Spartacist strikes of 1919. With his friend and colleague Rosa Luxemburg, he founded the Spartacist League and the Communist Party of Germany. The commemoration of their deaths is a significant event among many German Marxists.
