A Swiss naturalist and artist who was known for his very exact, scientific approach to painting birds and animals. He is regarded as a master of his art, despite a professional career that lasted only six years. He died aged 24 after years of illness, leaving a legacy of over a hundred colour plates, several hundred line drawings, innumerable field studies, and children’s book illustrations.
I am in awe of his ability to paint in the exact overlap of scientific accuracy and romantic beauty, and to balance WWF commissions and zoo work with children’s book illustration. Include ‘Der Wald Und Seine Tierre’.
