A Swiss naturalist and artist who was known for his very exact, scientific approach to painting birds and animals. He is regarded as a master of his art, despite a professional career that lasted only six years. He died aged 24 after years of illness, leaving a legacy of over a hundred colour plates, several hundred line drawings, innumerable field studies, and children’s book illustrations. I am in awe of his ability to paint in the exact overlap of scientific accuracy and romantic beauty, and to balance WWF commissions and zoo work with children’s book illustration.
