Joost Swarte
Guy Lochhead, 23/07/10
Dutch comic book artist who utilises and subverts Hergé’s ‘clear line’ style to create all sorts of narratives rich in early-20th century nostalgia. He hasn’t published a book in a while, and has instead been designing buildings and stained-glass windows. He’s very popular in Holland, and has been given an MBE and appeared on stamps there. Although Swarte’s stories are beautiful and engrossing, I don’t think they fit so well with how I want the children’s programmes to be. His drawings are very favourable of a look that requires a lot of money. I’m not sure I sympathise.
