Jim Flora
Guy Lochhead, 05/09/10
American artist, illustrator and children’s book author. His early work has been described as “diabolic”; containing comic violence, eroticism, playfulness and the macabre. As his popularity grew, through illustrations for RCA and Columbia records covers and mainstream magazines, his art became less shocking and perverse. He was a prolific artist right up to his death in 1998, with his later work showing a great awareness of his own mortality. Flora’s work enjoys a cult following, and he has been the subject of many books, but I don’t find him all that interesting. His style was fantastic, vibrant and unique, but that’s all I think of him as – a good drawer and painter, and an above-average children’s book writer.
