Jacques Tardi
Guy Lochhead, 21/07/10
French comic strip artist who has adapted many novels from many different sources into his comics. He is obsessed with his grandfather’s involvement in the First World War, and often writes on this subject. Although Tardi is very well-respected, and a great adaptor of satirical/political novels, I don’t feel inclined to include him in programme, partly because I think he doesn’t fit well with the rest of the selections, and partly because of the issue of originality (though I’m not sure how much that matters, tbh). I would include the ‘Adèle Blanc-Sec’ series, as she’s a great female central character, but it deals too much with the occult. Also, I just didn’t get that excited by his work.
