American writer known for his ‘gonzo’ journalism and contempt for authoritarianism, and his use of psychedelics, alcohol and firearms. Thompson is a significant figure in the history of journalism, but that’s not enough. I think he’s overrated. He was good at capturing (and contributing to) a public mood, but his only reaction against corruption, injustice, prejudice and the complete rottenness of American authority was to write little tirades for little papers. He was just good at being angry. It’s led to so many horrible, horrible copyists.
