Girl Talk
Guy Lochhead, 11/02/12
Greg Gillis is a biomedical engineer who produces music under the name Girl Talk. He takes disparate elements of a dozen or so different songs and puts them together into elaborate mash-ups that often knowingly play on the title or other content of the two sampled tracks to comical effect. He has involved himself pretty heavily in the debates around copyright and intellectual property, and further contextualises these issues within his other field as a medic. All his albums are available for as much as you want to pay from Illegal Art. December 7th is Greg Gillis day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is the kind of person that this list and blog was made for; multi-talented but focused, challenging but accessible… I will include Feed The Animals – the first of his albums to be offered up on a pay-what-you-want scheme – and Secret Diary – his first record, made while a medical student, make some reference to December 7th and probably also include a copy of some of the films he’s appeared in – perhaps RiP: A Remix Manifesto or Good Copy Bad Copy…
