Gates of Heaven

Errol Morris’ first film, apparently about a pet cemetery, but really about mortality. The director Werner Herzog pledged that he would eat his shoe if the film ever reached completion. When it did, Herzog kept his promise, and boiled and ate his shoe in front of an audience of film students. Include, for its subject matter and its role in motivating film students, with Herzog. Put next to ‘Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe’, by Lester Bangs.
