Garfield Minus Garfield
Guy Lochhead, 30/10/11
Bootleg Garfield comic strip conceived by Irish blogger/musician Dan Walsh in 2008 that deletes Garfield and his thought bubbles, leaving only Jon. The man’s experience becomes a sort of existential identity crisis, “a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb”. It actually received a blessing from Jim Davis, and some of them are available in a book with some of Davis’ attempts at Minusing. I love this because the results can be devastating, though they’re also always very funny. It’s so simple and so modern – re-appropriating and subverting super-popular culture through the internet. I will include the book next to a collection of original Garfield comics, because I think Garfield Minus Garfield is only truly great when you compare it to its source material.
