Flipper (Films)
Guy Lochhead, 25/04/12
The Flipper franchise was started with the film ‘Flipper’ in 1963. The general plot follows the relationship between a boy and a dolphin. These films’ hazy, idealised , completely unrealistic approach to conservation has since been completely undermined by Ric O’Barry (the animals’ trainer) now campaigning for dolphin captivity and training for entertainment to be abolished. The principal “Flipper” dolphin was apparently driven to suicide by mistreatment. Rather than encourage people to care for dolphins through misguided sentimentality, I will include some responsibly-made documentaries showing their intelligence, and a film like The Cove showing the threats to their existence.
