English artist and author of children’s books. After illustrating Evelyn Sharp’s ‘The London Child’ in 1927, she found herself appalled by the living conditions of working class Londoners and determined to write a book showing the effects of class division. She worked on a 40-foot mural at the Children’s House in Bow, and wrote two books – ‘Is It Well With The Child?’ and ‘The Family From One End Street’. The latter met mixed reviews upon its release in 1937, with some declaring it exceptional and others deeming it unsuitable for children for its realistic depiction of working class family life. After the success of that book, she continued to write and travelled extensively. She died in 1991.
Although ‘The Family From One End Street’ is a little twee by today’s standards, it is still very important (for mainly historical reasons) for introducing working class characters to children in a realistic way. I will include it.
