Ernst Haeckel
Guy Lochhead, 04/09/10
German naturalist, physician and artist who discovered and named thousands of new species, and coined many biological terms now used as standard. He also created a body of over a hundred detailed coloured plates of the natural world, and formed the ‘Monist League’ to promote his religious and political beliefs. Haeckel sounds like a bit of a kook. He was apparently prone to over-generalise and simplify things to uphold his beliefs (which included a form of white supremacy, related to a disbelief in natural selection), and took a great many scientific liberties. Not included. His pictures of Radiolaria are really summin’ else though..
