American social documentary filmmaker best known for her seven-part, eight-and-a-half hour film about apartheid, ‘Have You Heard From Johannesburg?’. Before that, she made films about the American civil rights movement and Rosie the Riveter.
Have You Heard From Johannesburg? is obviously a terrific achievement, and a fantastic resource for people wanting to know more about the South African civil rights movement. For this project though, it is too specific to one cause (this is also, of course, its strength as a documentary). I totally love her work and working method though – the personal is political – and will wait to see if anything a little broader comes about.
