Bill Callahan

Sometimes known as Smog, Callahan is an American singer-songwriter who writes modern American folk songs on mostly traditional folk/rock instruments. Originally recording on four-track, Callahan has altered his production a lot over his recording career. He’s also something of an indie heartthrob, having dated Joanna Newsom and Cat Power.Callahan’s songs are simultaneously classical in their chord pattern and lyrics and modern in the way they subvert the verse/chorus/verse structure. Instead, they steadily build in a free-flowing, amorphous progression. His voice is deep and unemotional. All of this adds up to make very comforting songs that gently pull you into familiar-yet-unfamiliar modern emotional American male sound worlds (I promise I’ll try not to write like this in the future). Despite this, I don’t feel like I need to include Smog because he’s just a good songwriter – a new person good at doing something old. My favourite album is ‘Knock Knock’.
