On November 26th 1977, the early-evening news report of local ITV station Southern Television was interrupted by ‘Asteron’ (or ‘Vrillon’, ‘Gillon’ or ‘Gramaha’), an ‘authorised representative of the Intergalactic Mission’ who warned against the danger of nuclear weapons and that Earth ‘must live in peace… or leave the galaxy’. Transmissions returned to a Looney Tunes cartoon. It was the first case of television broadcast signal intrusion. The incident is still believed by some to have been the real voice of an alien. The hoaxer has never been found. I think it might be worth including the name ‘Asteron’ in some way if I create a character that represents an interruption of television. I thought this might be interesting.
