Alan Resnais
Guy Lochhead, 20/05/10
French ‘Left Bank’ film director best known for his 1955 Holocaust documentary ‘Nuit et Brouillard’, romantic drama ‘Hiroshima, Mon Armour’ and ‘Last Year at Marienbad’. Although dealing with various subjects, in various genres, Resnais’ films can be characterised by their preoccupation with the ways in which the past alters the present. ‘Nuit et Brouillard’ was a revolutionary documentary that is as powerful now as it was at the time of its original release. I will include this. Resnais’ other work is patchy and less interesting to me. He is undoubtedly a great filmmaker, but I don’t think I want to include him.
