Agnieszka Holland
Guy Lochhead, 04/03/12
Polish director. She came from a family of resistance fighters. Her early films were highly political, criticising the Polish government of the late 70s/early 80s. She moved to France in 1981, just before martial law was declared in her home country. She has made films in many genres, though most frequently produces historical dramas. She has worked in TV and cinema. Her best known film is probably ‘Europa Europa’ (1990). Holland doesn’t really have a distinct style. She is a solid director who is able to bend her process to whatever the current project requires, whilst retaining core values of equality and an awareness of history. My favourite of her films is her 1993 version of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s ‘The Secret Garden’. This is also probably the only one of her films suited for children. I will include this.
