Judy Nylon
Guy Lochhead, 17/02/12
American artist who found her way during the punk era in New York and London as one half of Snatch. She recorded a solo album called ‘Pal Judy’ in 1982. Some of her artistic innovations have catalysed or been developed more famously by others – ambient music by Eno, cut-ups by John Cale. More recently she has been involved in international video art projects. Snatch was an awesome angry, witty punk group who didn’t feel limited by the punk palette; ‘Pal Judy’ is quiet industrial post-punk; the Eno and Cale stories are interesting; her Violins D’Ingres tattoos are awesome; and she always says something great in interviews. There’s a big emphasis on her impact on the scenes she was in not being documented, and this historical blindness is often attributed to her gender. Unfortunately, this injustice now clouds any re-appreciation of her work, and seems to be the core focus of new interviews. She is spoken of in relation to her famous friends and interesting life, with bitterness and regret.
